Middletown to Premiere at Sundance
I’m excited that the feature documentary Middletown will be premiering at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine, the film is about a group of teenagers in the 90’s who in the process of making a student film uncovered a conspiracy about toxic waste that was poisoning their town and being covered up by local government. It’s a wild story, and I love how it’s about AV club kids quite literally saving the environment. It’s been fun to mix, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it starting at this upcoming Sundance and beyond!
Omnivore Debuts on Apple TV+
I’m very happy to have been the Supervising Sound Editor and Re-Recording Mixer for three episodes of the Apple TV+ docuseries Omnivore.
Beautifully filmed, the series takes a look at food and ingredients around the world and how they impact our lives and tastes. Narrated by renowned chef Rene Redzepi, we mixed in Atmos and I couldn’t be prouder of how our episodes sounded. Our team sound edited and mixed Episode 1 “Chile”, Episode 2 “Tuna”, and Episode 5 “Pig”
The Mission and Victim/Suspect Nominated for Multiple Emmys
I’m very proud that The Mission was nominated for two Emmy awards, and Victim/Suspect was nominated for three at this year’s News & Documentary Emmys, with Victim/Suspect winning for Outstanding Research.
The Saint of Second Chances Nominated for a Cinema Eye
I loved working with Morgan Neville and Jeff Malmberg last year on this larger than life documentary about the life and legend of infamous baseball manager Mike Veeck. It has been fun to see it received since its debut on Netflix, and it’s still riding a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In October it was also nominated for a Cinema Eye award for best editing!
Golden Hour Sci-Fi Short Film
Earlier in the year it was a pleasure to work on a clever and twisty sci-fi short titled Golden Hour with writer/director Maureen McEly. It was fun designing sounds for a world that may not be quite real! It’s been on the festival circuit, and MovieMaker Magazine ran a nice piece on it!
Audiobook Sound Design for Pair of Children’s Tales
Also in the fall I had the fun privilege of engineering and sound designing a pair of delightful children’s audiobooks by author Sandra Payne. I’m so used to working on sound design against picture, it was a fun throwback to my early career radio theater days to design sonic storytelling for an audio-only set of projects. Both Wing and Elmer’s Elephant Birthday Party are available everywhere audiobooks are sold!
Mixing the Behind the Scenes Featurette for The Zone of Interest
I was asked by A24 to mix the fascinating 34-minute behind the scenes featurette ‘Filming Zone’ for the equally fascinating Zone of Interest Blu-Ray. Equal parts non-traditional and immersive, we got to build a flowing mosaic of audio commentary tracks by Production Designer Chris Oddy, Costume Designer Malgorzata Karpiuk, Director of Photography Łukasz Żal, and Editor Paul Watts all overlaid on Filip Skrońc’s visuals. I loved this movie, and I loved getting a chance to build the audio portion of this behind the scenes peek at the extraordinary and unorthodox way this movie was filmed.
Teaching Sound Design at Mizzou
It was an honor and a joy to be asked to guest lecture once again for Robert Greene’s documentary filmmaking course at the University of Missouri. I love getting to talk to students about their films, and teach the fundamentals of sound design and storytelling. It’s always so inspiring for me to see what the next generations of filmmakers are creating, and help them better understand how to use the creative tools of sound design in their stories and process. Being asked to guest lecture is something I love and cherish, and I always leap at the opportunity whenever I can!
Recording Sounds of the Rivers
And last but not least I also got to spend some time this summer out in the field recording an amazing river rafting sound library for an upcoming film. It was incredible to not only get out in nature and on the river, but to be able to fully mic up an 18ft river raft and record every aspect of it was a joy and a thrill. I’ll post more about both the film and the recording process sometime in 2025 when it comes out! But it’s always a nice reminder how helpful it can be to get out of the studio and into the world and experience all kinds of adventures (and it’s even better with a surround mic rig!)
